Siberians have been around for at least one thousand years as far as recorded history. They were first mentioned in Harrison Wier's book Our Cats and all About Them, which included information about one of the earliest cat shows held in England in 1871. However, finding written information in Russia is fairly difficult. Despite the fact that the Siberian is a natural breed and is the national cat of Russia, its very ubiquity makes it taken for granted rather than worthy of note in Russian literature. Add to this the vast expanse of Russia which encompasses 13 time zones as well as a multitude of ethnic and cultural diversity and you have a cat that seems as difficult to standardize as the country which gave rise to it. The Siberian, considered a semi longhair, has a rich full coat in the winter while the summer allows for a somewhat shorter less dense coat. [Siberians are a constellation of circles and curves, while Maine Coons are a confederation of rectangles, and Norwegian Forestcats are triagular in theme." Siberians are said to have been taken originally from Russia to Siberia, where they developed their thick protective coats against the harsh winters; then, ultimately brought back to Russia where they were bred, primarily in Leningrad and Moscow. Wild cats have been mated with Domestic cats and the result was the Siberian cat. Domestic cats did mate with European and Asian wildcats. (Felis Silvestris sp.)
About the breeds temperament
These cats are very territorial. It has been said that they have chased away deer, and other animals from their territory. They are good hunters, and fishers, and will dive after the fish in the water.
Like it's been said they like the water, and therefore it is no problem to give them a bath or a shower. A lot of them love to swim and will stay close to water sources, like spring fountains etc. But not all of them like water. This depends on were it was natural for their relatives to hunt. Cats in the tundra likes to hunt on the ground, Cats in the forest was hunting birds and cats around water was fishing. In Russia these cats are used as sircus cats, since they are easy to train, and a lot of the cats will respond to commands.
The Siberian cat is a non-allergie giving cat?
It have been seen through several years, and from all over the world that the Siberian cat does not bring forth an allergic reaction. The reasons for this can be a number of things, and they are well documented on many home sites.
Both fur, dandruff, secretes and saliva with an animal can give people an allergic reaction. In the cat world most of the parts that will create an allergic reaction is located in the saliva. When the cat cleans it`s fur, the saliva will dry, and will be transformed to dust which will hoover around and people will breathe in the dust. In the feline saliva there is a protein called FEL-D1, and this is the part which gives allergie. The Siberian cat does not have this protein in them, which means that a lot of people who normally would have an allergic reaction towards cats, may not react on these cats. But I have to underline that every person needs to be tested on the cat induvidually.
Most people react quikly when they are exposed to a cat in the house, and by visiting a home who have a Siberian cat they will quikly find out if the have a tollerance for the cat. The testemonials from breeders, and several allergics indicates that there is a tollerance for this breed. But allergie can be very induvidual and that people who are allergic can react different to the same cat. There is no garanties.
Standard Large, strong cats. The breed is slow to reach its maurioty, takes 5 years. The appearence should be strenght, force and size with good physical condition and alertness. Females weigh less then males. Body Medium sized to large cat, well-muscled and heavily built. Short neck and males have a more muscular neck than females, muscular, short legs, big, rounded, compact and well tufted feet. Tail as long as to reach almost the shoulder and medium sized, wide at base, with rounded tip. This breed has a thick triple coat with a full ruff that gets thicker in the winter months. Shorter in the summer because it is also hot in Siberia at summertime. The coat is a bit oily and very water-resistant, possibly an evolutionary trait that helped it deal with harsh Russian winters. Head Modified wedge of medium size with rounded contours, but not with a Persian look. Slightly rounded forehead, well developed cheekbones but not high set. Medium length nose with no stop. Ears Medium size, open at the base, tips are rounded, set wide apart and tilted forward. The ears must not be big on a cat that has finished its developing Eyes Large, slightly oval shaped. The colour is harmonizing with coat colour. Any shade from yellow/gold to green is accepted. The typical adult eye colour is yellow-green. In whites the eye colour can be blue or odd-eyed. Coat Coat is semi long, with very fine undercoat covered by substantial top coat. The top coat is waterproof and glossy, completely covering the undercoat. Long hair on neck, chest, breeches and tail in wintertime. Colour The pointed variety is called Neva Masquerade. Lilac, fawn, chocolate and cinnamon are not accepted also Burmese pattern. The most widespread colour is brown- or black tabby with or without white. Our cattery consider the traditional forestcolours and patters to be the most aboriginal. Solid Siberians and Colourpoint are made by human trought selective breeding. The blacks technically have brown undercoats, but selective breeding has managed to eliminate the brown undercoat and has produced cats that are 'black to the bone.
Faults Adult cats not having substantial size and weight. Too small or too finely built body, long or too round head, straight, fox-like profile, cats with Persian look, almond shaped eyes, too large ears, too long or thin legs, too short tail, too fine or silky coat.
